Spondylolithesis (Wobblers)

Wobblers syndrome is caused by a malformation or narrowing of the spinal neck vertebrae.  This causes pressure on the spinal cord by the lower cervical neck vertebrae due to a malformation or misalignment of the vertebrae in the neck.  The compression of the spinal cord leads to ataxia (an uncordination in gait) in the rear legs and can progress to the front legs as well.  Dogs with Wobblers may be unwilling to bend their neck and appear clumsy or may be unwilling or unable to walk on tile or hardwood floors without falling.  A dog that is severely affected moves in a drunken manner.  Usually, the onset is progressive in nature but it can be acute.  Wobblers syndrome requires veterinary intervention because left untreated it can lead to paralysis.  Diagnosis is usually made by neurological work up including X-rays and a myleogram.  There are multiple treatments available and include corticosteroids (prednisone), gold beads, acupuncture, neck wraps and surgery.  Genetics are thought to play a role in Wobblers syndrome in the Doberman pinscher.  A dog with Wobblers should only be walked with a body harness, as pressure on the neck by means of a head halter, regular, choke or pinch collar should be avoided.
